FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is cognitive therapy? Is it the same as CBT?
A: Cognitive therapy is one of the most tested and effective forms of intervention to change how you feel long term. The basic premise is that you feel how you think. If you can change your thoughts, you can change how you feel. I teach you how to do that effectively. Ultimately, you become your own therapist, in essence. CBT stands for Cognitive Behavior Therapy and it is essentially the same. All cognitive therapy includes behavioral components.

Q: Why does a Christian counselor use hypnosis?
A: Hypnosis is a wonderful form of focused attention. During the process, you are in complete control, but it uses many of the same mechanisms that are present in the dreams you have every night, and the subconscious mechanisms that you use to drive your car, breathe and blink. Hypnotherapy helps to reset your instincts or reactions and is particularly effective in the treatment of stress and specific phobias. Hypnosis is a relaxing natural experience that all clients love (so far). There is no relation to the occult at all. We all hypnotize ourselves many times a day. But undirected this is can be negative (anxiety about the future for example). I use the process as a directed experience to help a client to relax or make positive desired changes on a subconscious level by providing new, adaptive patterns for the subconscious to utilize.
Q: What is Emotionally Focused Therapy?
A: Emotionally focused couples therapy or EFT is a highly effective, tested form of therapy designed to quickly improve relationships. During sessions clients have positive experiences with each other, gain understanding and repair rifts that have occurred outside of the therapeutic environment. Rather quickly they begin to change how they deal with each other and issues by recognizing and adjusting the negative patterns they have fallen into and meeting their and their partner's attachment needs.
Q: Do I need to be Christian to get your help? Do we have to deal with faith issues?
A: You don't have to be Christian to work with me, in fact, many of my clients are not. I've just received additional training to deal with spiritual issues, and also have many years of experience at Saddleback Church helping people to deal with this important facet of their lives. Many of my clients never deal with faith based issues in therapy with me.
Q: How long does therapy last?
A: As all cases are different, that answer varies for every individual, couple or family, however CBT and EFT are both considered forms of brief therapy lasting between 12-15 sessions. I believe we can deal with most issues in that time period, but I don’t automatically limit therapy to that time. Therapy usually ends when the problems are resolved or we agree that there is no longer a benefit. That said, I have seen some clients for years and some have resolved their key issues in just a few sessions. Rapid Resolution Therapy (RRT) can be very brief, resolving major issues in just 2-3 sessions. Imagine clearing your biggest, life-impeding issues in just a few sessions.
We usually identify problems and objectives in the first session or two. It is at that time that we can project how many sessions it will take to effect the desired changes. Once couples have agreed that they both desire to work on the relationship, I ask them to commit to at least 12 weeks and to close all exits during this time. This ensures that we have the commitments in place to work through the rough spots that sometimes emerge during the therapeutic process.
Q: Do I have to deal with painful issues from my childhood in order to feel better?
A: Not at all. While this can be an effective way to change, it is not necessary. While I ask every client to complete a personal history, it is not common for us to focus on it for more than a session or two. RRT, CBT and EFT are focused on improving life going forward, not staying focused on a painful past.
Q: What do you charge?
A: My current fees are $135 for individuals, $150 for couples and families for each 50 minute session. I offer a sliding scale for those that can demonstrate a financial need. The sliding scale offers up to a 40% reduction in fee, which at the low end is $80 for individuals and $90 per couple/family per session. Major credit cards are accepted as well as checks or cash.
Q: Do you take insurance?
A: I am not currently on any insurance panels however I do provide a Superbill which can be submitted to your insurance company for reimbursement or deducted on your taxes (check with your tax advisor). Consult with your insurance provider for their reimbursement policy on ”out of network providers”.
